Social networking

This one has been the core of web2 applications over the last few years. The term is often used for sites that are primarily communicative, however in fact social networking is built into many of the new sites, eg youtube, flickr, blogs and wikis, via commenting and discussion boards. People who blog regularly (eg the educational bloggers or "edubloggers" have created a "blogosphere" by forging social connections across different sites.)

Learning activities

  • Join the Victorian ACE e-learning network , and post a blog reflection in there about your experience with e-learning in the classroom. (Hints on how to do this in the AccessACE classroom practice wiki.)
  • Follow a famous edublogger and leave a comment on one of their posts. Remember to leave a link back to your own blog.

Extra explorations

  • Join facebook and reconnect with your long lost schoolfriends or stalk your children. (What a nightmare.)
  • Join twitter and find some people to follow (hint, use one of the directories eg Jane Hart)
  • Install a twitter desktop application like Tweetdeck and compare that to the web interface.
  • Find out a bit about the story of the "read-write web".
  • Think about how you might use Ning, facebook or twitter in your classroom (or why you wouldn't).
  • Read up on Malcolm Jolly's 2009 research with facebook at Gipps Tafe.
